The Worldwide Voyage

Sail on Moana

In 1987 Hawai’i celebrated Ho’olåko Hawai’i, the Year of the Hawaiian. But there was virtually no programs or activities aimed at children, so Leon & Malia created a story-book cassette (yes, cassette!) so keiki had a way to participate in the celebration. It was a huge success! A few years later several of the songs were used a in Leon & Maliaʻs popular sing-along video, Keiki Calabash, and became mainstays in schools and homes throughout Hawai’i.

Hōkū‘lea Song

One of the songs was Hōkūleʻa, about the navigational star and the voyaging canoe that shared the same name and lineage. Over the years, in their popular Calabash Concerts series in Hawaii’s schools, Leon & Malia have sung their Hōkūleʻa song with literally over 200,000(!) children singing at the top of their voices in tribute to Hōkūleʻa, the star and the canoe.

Song Kits

In celebration of the Mālama Honua, the Worldwide Voyage, Leon & Malia created two special Song Kits (mini-curriculum) for pre-school through elementary-aged children to learn about and celebrate the special around the world voyage of Hōkūleʻa to carry the message of caring for our planet. The Sail on Moana Song Kit can be used virtually everywhere by schools, community groups, home schoolers, families, etc. Sail on Moana can be ordered from the online store along with many other musical products from Leon & Malia.
